What Does Bart Say: Duinrell — Previewing the brand-new Kikker8baan!

On November 9, 2025, an era came to an end: the trusted Kikkerachtbaan made its very last round. For many – and for me as well – this was an iconic roller coaster. That had nothing to do with spectacular launches or dizzying heights, but everything to do with nostalgia. After all, it was the ride that served as the very first roller coaster experience for many of us. And let’s be honest: what is Duinrell without their Kikkerachtbaan? Exactly, nothing. Fortunately, Duinrell chose to keep the Kikkerachtbaan; albeit in a new look (and name: the Kikker8Baan), but one that is ready for the next 40 years. It is a roller coaster with a nod to the past, featuring that iconic frog right on the front of the train.

What many people actually don’t know, is that there used to be a motocross track of no less than four kilometers on the spot where you now find the attractions. For the renewal of the Kikkerachtbaan, Duinrell dug deep into that history and used this as the theme for the Kikkerachtbaan 2.0. It is a charming piece of history that has been implemented subtly. One notable detail is Rick the Frog sitting on a motorcycle at the front of the train – a direct reference to the riders who used to do their laps. And just before you depart, you can hear the roar of a starting motorcycle engine. It is a great way to connect the estate’s history with the park of today, without it becoming too loud.

For the coaster enthusiasts among us: the layout is actually completely mirrored, although that familiar ‘double 8’ has, of course, remained. While manufacturer Zierer no longer produces the old ‘Tivoli’ model, they do still build the ‘Force’ coaster type. And Duinrell has a real world first here: this is actually the very first double 8 that Zierer has ever built using the Force model.

The fact that the Kikkerachtbaan is so well-loved became clear today during the special test day. A few weeks ago, Duinrell looked for 100 test riders, but due to overwhelming interest, that number was quickly expanded to 500 – and that was certainly noticeable at the park today. The entire group was eager to go, all dressed in bright green construction vests. It was those very vests that determined who got to take the very first ride; the lucky ones were picked out by a special mark inside the label. I stood next to one of them, and I have never seen anyone so happy. A brilliant touch by Duinrell! After the opening remarks by the park’s director, it was time to experience the new Kikker8baan for myself. The ride feels much smoother and more modern than the original, but thanks to the familiar double 8 layout, that authentic Kikkerachtbaan feeling fortunately remains fully intact.

Within just five months, Duinrell demolished the old Kikkerachtbaan and built the new Kikker8baan. While the greenery in the area still needs some time to grow and construction is still ongoing around the attraction, the track itself is ready for the new season. The new Duinrell season officially kicks off this Friday, April 3. Are you planning to take a ride on the new Kikker8baan this season?
