It seems to be becoming quite the trend for theme parks lately: opening their gates during the cozy winter season. Parks that used to keep their doors firmly closed from Halloween all the way until spring are increasingly choosing to welcome guests during the coldest months of the year. Walibi Holland jumped on this bandwagon a few years ago, transforming their thrill-capital into something completely different.

After seeing the atmospheric images of the first two editions, I chose to visit Walibi’s winter event this year. It makes for a fascinating review, assessing how a park known for intense thrills transitions into a cozy winter destination, and whether Bright Nights genuinely delivers on that festive promise.

The days leading up to our visit, a storm of complaints flooded Walibi Holland’s social media. Visitors were frustrated about attractions being closed or only operating for part of the day. Of course, mid-winter weather conditions are unpredictable, and the park is ultimately at the mercy of Mother Nature. While Walibi clearly states on their website that delayed openings or closures can happen, and the ride ops undoubtedly work around the clock to get everything running, we still left for Biddinghuizen with mixed feelings. During the drive, I found myself constantly reloading the Walibi app, checking the ride statuses and mentally preparing to just make the best of it. Fortunately, luck was on our side: Walibi Holland managed to open every single attraction—including the water rides!

The moment we stepped through the gates, the winter atmosphere hit us immediately. It wasn’t just the festive soundtrack, but the thoughtfully placed decor—think snow-dusted Christmas trees, crisp lighting, and an unexpected local snow shower right at the entrance. It was instantly clear that Walibi had gone all out for Bright Nights. Main Street and the Hall of Fame looked lavishly decorated. If you read my recent review of the Winter Efteling, you already know how much I appreciate a well-executed winter event in a theme park. Seeing this high level of theming right at the start instantly set the bar high for the rest of the park.

When it comes to entertainment, Walibi truly pulled out all the stops for Bright Nights. Beyond the main stage show (which I’ll dive into shortly), the various themed areas were packed with roaming characters, from festive musical acts to Santa’s energetic helpers. You could stumble into a performance at any corner. In fact, on our way to the next attraction, we unknowingly bumped right into Santa Claus himself. A spontaneous limbo line formed, and while I highly doubted my flexibility, I actually managed to scramble my way under the bar! Not realizing it was the official Santa squad at the time, we walked away without snapping a picture—a minor regret, but luckily, we got a second chance after the main show.

That main performance, the 15-minute Walibi & Coolest Friends show, brings a fun storyline to the stage. It follows Walibi and the crew preparing for the ultimate Christmas party, until the Ice Queen tries to ruin the festive spirit. Feeling overshadowed by Santa over the years, she crashes the party and plots to kidnap Father Christmas to steal the spotlight for herself. It’s a lighthearted, well-paced production that perfectly suits the event’s family-friendly atmosphere.

Once the curtains fall, there is a meet-and-greet opportunity with Walibi, Santa, and the Ice Queen. And honestly, who could resist a photo with Walibi wearing an ugly Christmas sweater? During the daylight hours, the park also offers several indoor and outdoor activities to keep the momentum going. Visitors can try laser gaming inside the renovated Yummy Tummy restaurant, or join a tree-decorating activity on the stage opposite Lost Gravity. Because showtimes and activity schedules can vary dynamically from day to day, keeping an eye on the official Walibi app is definitely a must to plan your day effectively.

As soon as the sun dipped below the horizon, it was time for the main event: the transition into Bright Nights, rides & lights. While the light installations are visible during the day, the park truly transforms after 4:30 PM when the attractions light up, shifting the entire atmosphere into high gear. It’s worth noting that a few select rides close at sunset; fortunately, Walibi clearly states the operating hours at each queue entrance. The various roller coasters and flat rides were treated to their own synchronized light packages, making the illuminated themed areas look spectacular in the dark. Call me crazy, but riding Condor with a custom light show and Mariah Carey blasting in the background is an experience you simply cannot skip. It may not be a fan-favorite among coaster enthusiasts, but in this winter setting, it’s an absolute blast.

An interactive touch this year was the addition of several buttons hidden throughout the themed areas. Pushing them activates extra light and sound effects—and during our visit, even the roaming entertainment responded to them. On the downside, a minor point of criticism would be the lighting on some of the pathways. A few walking routes felt remarkably dark, only lighting up momentarily when an effect was triggered. That minor detail aside, the evening atmosphere was fantastic, especially since the park seemed to ramp up its entertainment after dark, introducing luminous creatures and atmospheric actors that weren’t there during the day.

Are the Bright Nights at Walibi Holland worth a visit?
If the weather plays nice and the ride lineup is operating at full capacity, my answer is a definitive yes. The entertainment is high quality, and the night rides alone are worth the price of admission—especially a pitch-black winter ride on UNTAMED! The park operates from 12:00 to 20:00, but arriving around 14:00 still gives you plenty of time to experience everything without feeling rushed. However, I have to be honest: if severe winter weather forces major ride closures, the event loses its main draw. Since Walibi’s lineup consists almost entirely of outdoor attractions, there simply isn’t enough indoor alternative content to justify a visit if the coasters are down.

To close out the event, Walibi presents a grand fireworks finale at the main stage. Due to our long drive back home, we ultimately chose to skip the show this time. But knowing Walibi’s track record with high-energy productions, I have no doubt they delivered a fantastic spectacle. All in all, Walibi Holland has built a wonderfully atmospheric winter event with Bright Nights, and it’s an addition to the season they can be genuinely proud of.
